Composer Daniel Lau will explore topics such as melody writing for preexistent text, the multiple meanings of phrase segmentation in Cantonese, the musical interests generated by semantic ambiguity, and how a singer’s change of timbre contributes to dramatic effects in his music. After the talk, soprano Rosella Tang will perform six Cantonese art songs from two sets composed by Prof. Kai-Young Chan and Daniel Lau. Following this, Prof. Kai-Young Chan will introduce the latest developments from the AI team at Mobut, including the "Cantonese Melody to Tone Converter" and the "AI Cantonese Lyrics Writing Tool”, and will host a discussion with the artists after the performance.
